5 facts about the eyes

1. Fastest muscle in the body

The fastest muscle in the body in the orbicularis oculi. It is the muscle around the eye which causes the eyelid to close. It is responsible for blinking.

2. Babies don't cry tears when born

Seems strange, doesn't it? When babies are born, the part which forms the tears (lacrimal glands) only produce enough liquid to keep the eye moisturised. For most children, somewhere between 2 weeks and 3 months old, they begin to form enough liquid to cry visible tears. Before then, it's just a lot of wailing and screaming.

3. Over 2 billion people in the world live with visual impairment

Visual impairment is when someone has a reduced level of vision. In up to 1 billion of these cases, it is considered to have been either preventable or unaddressed. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the leading causes of visual impairment are uncorrected vision (lack of glasses), cataracts, diabetic complications, glaucoma and macular degeneration.

4. The most common eye colour is brown

The iris is part of the eye which can appear in a range of shades and colours. The most common eye colour around the world is brown. Despite this, the iris has more distinct features than our finger prints.

5. The average person blinks 12 times per minute

This is known as the blink rate. When concentrating or staring at something e.g. using a computer or watching TV, people tend to blink less often.
